What causes leakage in carbon steel gate valves?

Leakage in carbon steel gate valves is a relatively common problem. If a leak occurs, it can endanger equipment and the safety of personnel, so it’s crucial to identify and resolve the issue promptly. Carbon steel valves lack corrosion resistance and can only be used in pipelines carrying non-corrosive media such as steam, oil, and water. Furthermore, carbon steel valves are significantly cheaper than stainless steel valves. Therefore, carbon steel is generally used for pipelines carrying non-corrosive media like steam, while stainless steel valves and other materials are used for pipelines carrying corrosive media.

Carbon steel gate valves are industrial valves widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and power plants. They offer advantages such as automation, ease of operation, and long service life.

Causes of Leakage in Carbon Steel Gate Valves:

1. Low machining precision of the wedge-shaped sealing ring leads to internal leakage in carbon steel gate valves. Choosing gate valves from reputable brands generally ensures higher quality components, preventing issues with low-precision sealing ring machining.

2. Unstable operating conditions cause internal leakage. Gate valves have high requirements for their working environment. If pressure and temperature fluctuate significantly, the sealing ring bears heavy impact pressure, easily deforming and leading to valve leakage.

3. Poor valve maintenance quality causes internal leakage. Some maintenance personnel fail to properly clean the sealing surface of the sealing ring during maintenance. Impurities can affect valve operation and, over time, scratch the sealing surface, leading to leakage.

4. Media corrosion causes leakage. During long-term operation, the sealing ring is susceptible to corrosion under the influence of the media. Once corrosion reaches a certain level, the sealing ring is damaged, resulting in leakage.

5. Defects in the valve body: If the valve body has problems such as air holes, slag inclusions, cracks, or sand holes, then the gate valve is prone to external leakage during use.
